In 2017 the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) was asked to conduct a comprehensive review into the family law system including the Family Law Act 1975, with a view to making necessary reforms to ensure the family law system meets the contemporary needs of families and effectively addresses family violence and child abuse.

The ALRC concluded its review, and presented its Final Report. The Final Report and a Summary Report are now available from the ALRC website.

On 21 March 2021 the Australian Government released its response to the ALRC Report 135: Family Law for the Future – An Inquiry into the Family Law System. It outlines the government's position on each of the ALRC's 60 recommendations for reform.
