On , 9 February 2017, Senator the Hon George Brandis QC, Attorney-General of Australia, referred to the Australian Law Reform Commission an inquiry into the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our prisons.
The terms of reference request that the ALRC examine the the laws, frameworks and institutions and broader contextual factors that lead to the disturbing over‑representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in our prison system.
