Data Strategy 2025–2027

Key focus areas
This strategy focuses on developing four key areas to help the department deliver on its mandate to maintain and improve Australia’s law and justice framework.
Data literacy
Continue strengthening our data literacy across the department to better engage with data as business as usual to leverage data more effectively, drive innovation and make better informed decisions.
Analytical capability
In today’s complex justice landscape, the ability to transform raw data into actionable insights is crucial. As the amount of data continues to grow, our ability to take advantage of AI, machine learning and other emerging analytical tools and technologies will improve our ability to develop robust evidence-based policies. We are committed to creating a robust analytics ecosystem to facilitate evidence-based decision-making.
Indigenous Data Sovereignty
As the department’s data literacy and capability grows, so must our efforts to support the implementation of the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and its priority reforms.
Data Sharing
As government priorities become more interconnected, data must be shared safely, securely and appropriately to achieve better outcomes. Our policies must be informed and underpinned by a strong evidence base while protecting individuals’ privacy through responsible and transparent handling of personal information.
