Australia's Position

The primary role of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights is to consider the compatibility of legislation and legislative instruments with human rights. The Committee may also undertake inquiries on matters referred to it by the Attorney-General.

The Australian Government will consider the functions of the Committee in an ongoing manner. The Australian Government does not propose to alter the mandate of the Committee at this time, as the priority is to have it continue to fulfil its existing important functions for the Parliament of Australia.

In 2016 the Australian Government established a Standing National Human Rights Mechanism to strengthen its overall engagement with United Nations human rights reporting.

Two functions set out in the Terms of Reference for the Standing Mechanism are:

  • responding to/follow-up on recommendations and concluding observations arising from United Nations human rights mechanisms,
  • management of Australia's UPR monitoring process.
