Australia's Position

The Australian Government is not proposing to become a party to the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights at this time.

Australia played a constructive role in the discussions of the working group drafting the Optional Protocol for the development of a workable instrument that recognised the special characteristics of economic social and cultural rights.

The Australian Government will monitor future developments in relation to the Optional Protocol.
