Australia's Position

The Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) closed the Manus Regional Processing Centre on 31 October 2017. Regional processing arrangements will continue in Nauru. The Australian Government continues to assist the Governments of PNG and Nauru to identify durable migration outcomes for people under regional processing arrangements. The Australian Government's strong border protection policies – including the policy not to resettle people who come to Australia illegally by boat – have enabled us to secure our borders and break the business of people smugglers.

The Australian Government cooperates with our regional partners to resolve the shared challenge of people smuggling and irregular migration. Regional processing, among other policies, has reduced illegal maritime travel to our region and prevented people from risking their lives at sea.
