The majority of people coming to Australia comply with the Australian Government's migration laws. A very small percentage are detained in an immigration detention facility, if they are reasonably suspected of being an unlawful non-citizen. The Australian Government treats all people in detention with respect, dignity and fairness. While a person is in an immigration detention facility, the Australian Government provides them with appropriate food, medical, recreational and other support services, including mental health services. Detainees are able to access legal representation in accordance with the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) and the Australian Government provides detainees with the means to contact family, friends and other support. If a detainee requires an interpreter, the Australian Government will provide one. The Australian Government respects and caters for religious and cultural diversity.
The Australian Government will continue to promote the safety of migrants and refugees and maintain high standards of health care and other services provided in its immigration detention facilities.
