Recommendation 204
• States and territories
State and territory governments are responsible for the criminal justice systems in their jurisdiction, including training staff and reviewing the administration of justice.
The Australian Government is working with communities and jurisdictions to support and promote safer communities for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Part of the Australian Government's focus for funding and support is to prevent crime, and implement diversion and rehabilitation programs. Information about this work can be found on the Community Safety page on the Indigenous Affairs-Community Safety page of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet website.
The Australian Government also funds legal assistance for Indigenous people through the national Indigenous Legal Assistance Programme. Information about the programme can be found on the Indigenous legal assistance page on the Attorney-General's Department website.
The Australian Law Reform Commission has conducted an inquiry into the incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and tabled the resulting report Pathways to Justice in March 2018. The Australian Government is considering the report's recommendations.
