The Australian Government regularly reviews legislation and capabilities to meet emerging challenges.
The Australian Parliament has passed 12 tranches of national security legislation through the Parliament of Australia since 2014. This is the most significant program of national security legislation reform since September 2001.
At a special meeting of the Council of Australian Governments on counter-terrorism (CT COAG) on 5 October 2017, Australian leaders agreed to a package of legislative and practical measures to further strengthen a nationally consistent approach to countering the evolving terrorism threat.
Further information on national security legislation is available on the Australian Government's National Security website.
Information about policies and programmes related to national security and counter-terrorism is available on the what Australia is doing page on the Australian National Security website. This website includes advice on both national and state and territory policies and programs.
